Safeguarding

At the West Cumbria Learning Centre we aim to safeguard and promote our pupils’ welfare, safety and health.  We believe in involving children and young people in decision-making in school.  This includes activities within the curriculum, personal and social education, and emotional aspects of learning.  Children / Young People are encouraged to share any concerns they may have, and we make a promise to take their concerns seriously and to act upon them.

The staff of the West Cumbria Learning Centre are in a good position to keep a watchful eye on children to keep them safe and to protect them from harm. If staff have any concerns regarding a child’s safety, they have a duty to inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead, or Deputy Safeguarding Leads immediately.

The Education Act (2002) states that, “The Governing Body ….. shall make arrangements for ensuring that their functions relating to the conduct of the school are exercised with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children ….”

What you should do if you are worried about a child

  • If you believe them to be at risk of immediate danger, dial 999 and speak to the Police
  • Otherwise, contact the Cumberland Children Advice and Support Service on 0333 240 1727. The number is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • You can also contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000. The NSPCC provide free support for anyone who’s worried about a child. Their lines are open Monday to Friday 8am – 10pm, or 9am – 6pm at the weekends. It’s free and you don’t have to say who you are.  Click here for more information
