Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance
Provision
There has never been a time when careers guidance has been as important for young people as it is today. The landscape of education, training and employment opportunities that pupils need to navigate is more complex and more challenging than that faced by previous generations. While the economy is currently under strain due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, levels of youth unemployment and under-employment will continue to be high. The raising of the age for participating in learning means that young people face a wider range of choices of courses and places to study.
Qualifications such as GCSE are changing, and opportunities in higher education extend now beyond the UK to other parts of Europe and further afield. Pupils need help to make choices and manage transitions: they need good quality careers education, information, advice and guidance.
West Cumbria Learning Centre intends to provide a good careers programme, which will provide our pupils with the knowledge, inspiration and ability to take ownership of their own career action plans, enabling them to succeed in their chosen career paths. We will offer each pupil opportunities to meet with employers, both in centre, or as workplace visits, encourage familiarity with further education establishments and introduce pupils to employers offering apprenticeships. All pupils will be able to explore pathways open to them and will formulate an individual career plan based on their experiences and plans for the future. Curriculum links will be made to ensure learning is relevant to the working world. Careers education does not just mean informing pupils about their options after school, but also how their school career will affect their futures. It is our statutory duty to ensure that all pupils receive independent, impartial advice and guidance regarding all options within school and how these may affect their options after school in determining which careers pathways will become available to them. By helping pupils with decisions at crucial stages, informing them of all their options and introducing them to the world of work, we aim to prepare them for life after school whichever path they choose.
Evaluation
We carry out an end of year survey to understand how well we have met our pupils’ needs and to identify improvements.
Throughout each academic year, Compass + (the Careers Benchmark tool) is continually updated. Results of the assessment are used to identify further improvements. Click here to view the results of our most recent evaluation.
The destination data of Year 11 Leavers is tracked following their time at WCLC and their engagement with education, training and employment is reported to WCLC for three years following their leaving date. Students who become NEET (not in education, employment or training) during this time are supported to re-engage with learning by Inspira through a variety of schemes.
